TODAY IS ZACH’S B-DAY. IN 2004 I BLINK SPELLED “HAPPY BIRTHDAY.” IN 2005, I SIGNED IT. MY GOAL WAS 2 SAY IT THIS YEAR. I CAN’T. I CAN SAY A FEW THINGS SLURRED & UNRECOGNIZABLE WHEN I SIGN. I HAVE BETTER CONTROL 2 ATTEMPT 2 SAY STUFF WHEN I WANT, BUT APHASIA USUALLY WINS & I HAVE 2 WAIT 4 “THE RT. BREATH” WHICH STINKS SINCE NOT ANY BREATH WILL DO & I ALREADY HAVE 2 WAIT 4 A BREATH, SINCE I CAN’T SPONTANEOUSLY SPEAK & HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHEN THAT BREATH WILL COME. THERE’S PROGRESS, ESP. MUCH THAT’S UNNOTICED WHERE BREATHING’S CONCERNED, JUST NOT 2 THE DEGREE I’D HOPED.
Happy Birthday to Zach! It was so great to see you and be able to spend some time with you when you were in Utah for Morgan’s wedding. I have so much respect for you and it was so good to see how well you looked and how much you can do now. You have made so much good out of a very difficult situation. I can’t imagine how frustrating it is to make a goal like being able to tell Zach ‘Happy Birthday’ and then, despite how hard you try, not be able to do it. You
have so much courage and inner strength. Lots of us are learning to better deal with our little trials by listening to and watching you and Mark deal with your big trial. Keep that beautiful chin up! Know how much we all love you. Aunt Lois Ann
